The roots of Liberty Worship Center Church of God in Christ trace back to two great churches, East End Church of God in Christ in Ahoskie, NC, and St. Paul Church of God in Christ in Tyner, NC. Each church was founded on holiness, faith, and a commitment to spreading the Gospel, and through the years, both congregations experienced the mighty hand of God at work.
East End COGIC was established by Missionary Harris from Robersonville, NC, who had a vision to secure a place of worship for the saints in Ahoskie and surrounding townships. The church quickly became known for its spirit-filled services, vibrant worship, and strong family connections, with families such as the Faisons and the Chamblees playing a crucial role. Over the years, faithful pastors including Elder Smallwood, Elder Merritt N. Chapman, Sr., and Elder James Jasper Scott, Sr. led the church. Under Pastor Scott’s leadership along with his wife Missionary Thelma D. Scott, the church grew significantly, prompting a move to a larger three-story building in downtown Ahoskie in 1997. Mother Lucy Faison was the church mother for many years and was a mighty prayer warrior.
However, after extensive water damage to the building, the church was relocated to St. Paul COGIC in Tyner, where Pastor Scott was installed as pastor. Many East End members faithfully traveled to Tyner, continuing to serve God under his leadership.
St. Paul COGIC had its beginnings in 1915 as The Mission Church, founded by Will Twine, a Methodist.
Elder Johnny Lawrence was the pastor at the Mission in the 1920's. The church was moved to Center Hill Church Road, its name changed to Center Hill Church of God of Christ. Other pastors of the church were Elder Spruill of Williamston, NC and Elder Sawyer from Roper, NC, Elder Spivey, Elder Freeman and Elder Aaron Bazemore from Windsor, NC. Superintendent Henry Swain from Windsor, NC filled in until Elder Ananias Purkett was installed as pastor.
Under the leadership of Elder Ananias Purkett and his wife, Missionary Eunice Purkett, the church underwent significant renovations and expansions, including the addition of a cafeteria that he built largely with his own hands.
Following Elder Purkett’s passing, Elder James J. Scott, Sr. was installed as pastor in 2005 along with his wife, Missionary Thelma D. Scott. With their deep spiritual insight and love for ministry, they continued to build upon the church’s foundation until his passing in 2007. He was succeeded by Elder Sylvester Williams, and his wife Evangelist Missionary Alice Williams who led for 15 years, overseeing numerous renovations and upgrades that strengthened the church's infrastructure, while being steadfast in preaching and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Under his tenure, Mother Elaine Capehart was appointed General Church Mother.
When Elder Williams transitioned to glory in February 2022, the saints remained prayerful and steadfast, trusting that God would guide them forward.
On the 4th Sunday in March 2022, Bishop Leroy Jackson Woolard appointed Evangelist Ryan Keyes as Pastor Designate of St. Paul COGIC. With a heart for the people and a clear vision for the future, Pastor Keyes, alongside his wife, Lady Jennifer Keyes, worked diligently to reorganize and strengthen the ministry. Led by the Holy Ghost and with the full support of the congregation, the church was renamed Liberty Worship Center Church of God in Christ, Inc. and relocated to Williamston, NC. Evangelist Missionary Alice Williams remains at the church assisting the Pastor in carrying out the vision of the church.
The church initially worshiped at the E.J. Hayes Alumni Building before, by divine favor, securing a permanent location on West Blvd. Under Pastor Keyes’ leadership, Liberty Worship Center COGIC has experienced tremendous growth, with new families connecting both in person and virtually. The church continues to move forward with a renewed focus on holiness, deliverance, and community impact. Mother Elaine Capehart remains as the General Church Mother, a staple of holiness and intercessory prayer. Evangelist Missionary Alice Williams, former first lady and widow of Pastor Sylvester Williams remains at the church assisting the Pastor in carrying out the vision of the church and now serves as one of the church mothers as well.
Liberty Worship Center COGIC stands today as a beacon of hope and revival, rooted in the legacies of East End COGIC and St. Paul COGIC. The church remains committed to winning souls, equipping believers for ministry, and spreading the Gospel throughout Martin County and beyond & serves as a source of power and faith to the community.
With a firm foundation in holiness and the power of God, We strive to create an atmosphere of transformative praise, worship, and prayer that leads individuals to encounter God’s presence and power. Together, we envision a thriving community of believers who are spiritually empowered, purpose-driven, and passionately committed to making an eternal impact.
Liberty Worship Center continues to grow, reaching new heights under the guidance of Pastor Keyes and the anointing of the Holy Ghost. The legacy of faith lives on, and the best is yet to come!
